A brief History of Memorial Day
After getting the information about Memorial Day, it is very necessary for the young generation of the United States to know about the history and significance of this day. Memorial Day 2027 will brief you about the history and how it became a national event and a federal holiday.
In earlier days, after the American Civil War from 1861-1865, the loss of lives was more than any conventional war in the US, which required the establishment of the nation's first national cemeteries.
1865–1868: In the initial 3 years, people from different parts of the United States, both the southern and northern parts, started celebrating it locally to pay tribute to their martyrs of the Civil War. They started decorating their graves with flowers and flags, and different wreath ceremonies occurred.
May 5, 1868 (Grand Army of the Republic Order): General John A. Logan, who was the leader of a veterans organization for Northern Civil War veterans, declared May 30 as Decoration Day. The reason for the selection of this date was that flowers in that season across the nation would be in full bloom. So, this was the first major celebration of that day to pay tribute to the martyrs of the nation.
May 30, 1868 (The First Major Celebration): On may 30th, 1868, General James Garfield delivered an impactful speech at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia to pay tribute to the martyrs of the Civil War. It was the first official celebration of an event (Decoration Day) where 20,000 Union and Confederate graves were decorated with flowers by millions of attendees.
1882 (Name Change to Memorial Day): In 1882, the event started to be celebrated in all states to pay tribute to all martyrs of the United States in any war, and it no longer remained limited only to Civil War deaths. It was named Memorial Day, with the holiday expanded across the states.
1968 (Uniform Monday Holiday Act): In 1968, Congress passed an act (Uniform Monday Holiday Act) to declare the last Monday of May as a national holiday and provide 3 consecutive holidays to federal employees. This act came into effect in 1971, and Memorial Day became a national holiday in the United States officially.
